| Samenvatting: | PEACE AND DISARMAMENT. ACADEMIC STUDIES is the first book in a series of regular publications by the Peace and Disarmament Research Council which was set up in 1997 by the USSR Academy of Sciences, the USSR State Committee for Science and Technology and the Soviet Peace Committee. This series was conceived as a kind of forum for the exchange of ideas, views, assessments and suggestions between prominent Soviet scientists, public figures and scientific bodies concerning the present-day international situation, the tasks ensuing therefrom, and forecasts for the future. The books in this series will brief the reader on the progress made by scientists in studying peace and disarmament problems. Articles of a controversial nature reflecting the prevailing views on these problems will be published here.
The first book discusses the topical issues of international political and military detente, the restriction of the arms race, extension and the strengthening of international cooperation. The reference section contains a review of the activities of the research institutions of the USSR Academy of Sciences engaged in peace and disarmamemt studies, an annotated bibliography of the latest publications and lists of the international events of meetings of scientists. Also included are the texts of the more important treaties, agreements, and statements on peace and disarmament problems signed by the USSR recently. The book is supplied with an index and short biographies of the authors.
This edition is subject to structural changes for the purpose of its improvements. The editor-in-chief is Academician Nikolai Inozemtsev, Chairman of the Peace and disarmament Research Council, Director of the Institute of World Economy and International Relations of the USSR Academy of Sciences. |
